The cabinet has decided that employees in Germany will continue to be able to claim tax benefits for working from home in 2022. In addition, the 5-euro-per-day allowance for the home office will be extended.
Home office benefit in Germany continues in 2022
To compensate for the additional costs incurred by workers who are required to switch to a home office after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the federal government has agreed to introduce a home office allowance that will allow workers to deduct 5 euros in their annual tax return for each day they work from home, up to a maximum of 600 euros per year.
The German government has now agreed to extend the scheme until 2022. This means that employees will be able to deduct five euros from their annual tax bill for each day they work from home – regardless of whether they work in a separate “home office” or from the kitchen table. The maximum limit of 600 euros for the tax deduction remains unchanged.
